Barrie had won the previous three meetings with the Royals and the two are to play twice more this season – Sunday at Barrie at 3:05 p.m. and Aug. 8 at Hastings Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

The Royals had a three-run lead before Barrie came to bat in the match. With one out, Conner Morro reached base on an error before J.D. Williams was walked and Malik Collymore hit a single to score Morro. Williams and Collymore both recorded stolen bases before both scored on a two-out single by Justin Interisano.

The Baycats got one run back in the bottom of the inning before the Royals added two more in the top of the second. A two-out triple by Collymore scored Brando Leroux (walked) and Morro (single).

Barrie also scored two in the second while Guelph’s final run came in the third on back-to-back doubles by Ethan Hammond and Noah Roberts and a groundout by Kyle Kush.

The Royals had 10 hits and stranded nine in the game. Collymore hit a triple and single while Hammond had a double and single and Morro and Interisano each hit two singles and Roberts and Kush each had a double.

Malik Williams hit a double and two singles for Barrie while Adam Odd had a double and a single and Josh Cote and Carson Burns each hit a double. Adding one single apiece were Canice Ejoh, Noel McGarry-Doyle, Ryan Rijo and Kyle Maves.

Brandon Deans made his first start of the season for the Royals and picked up the win as he went 5 1/3 innings. He allowed three earned runs off eight hits and three walks and he fanned six. With Andrew Case coming in as the closer for Guelph, Deans has to take on another role.

Kyle Thomas relieved and turned in what was his strongest outing of the season and second consecutive strong outing as he went the final 3 2/3 innings to get the save. He allowed an earned run off three hits and a walk and he whiffed eight of the 15 batters he faced. While he gave up two unearned runs in two innings in his previous outing against Welland nine days earlier, Thomas had yielded 22 runs, 18 earned, off 29 hits and four walks in 15 1/3 innings in his other four outings this season. He totalled nine strikeouts in those games.

Juan Benitez took the loss for Barrie after giving up all six runs, three earned, off eight hits and four walks in six innings. He had three strikeouts.

Chris Cox, Brandon Hillier and Brad Grieverson each pitched an inning. The Royals got a hit off both Hillier and Grieverson and a walk off Grieverson. Cox and Hillerson each had a strikeout.
