Royals drop Barrie to move into tie with Hamilton

GUELPH – The Guelph Royals got back to their winning ways Tuesday night as they downed the Barrie Baycats 8-2 in Intercounty Baseball League play at Hastings Stadium.

The Royals never trailed in the game, scoring at least a run in four consecutive to break a tie to claim the victory.

The Royals grabbed the early lead when Conner Morro (his first) and Josh Garton (third) slugged back-to-back homers in the first inning.

Barrie pulled even with a pair of runs in the second before the Royals went ahead for good with two runs in the fifth. They’d also add one run in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth to conclude the scoring.

Kyle Kush and Ashton Patterson opened the bottom of the fifth with consecutive triples to score Kush with the go-ahead run for the Royals before Morro, the next batter up, singled to score Patterson.

The Royals clubbed 15 hits in the game with Garton hitting a homer and two singles and Kush hitting a triple and two singles. Morro contributed a homer and a single, Patterson a triple and a single and Claudio Custodio two singles. J.D. Williams hit a double while Chris Robinson and Justin Interisano each hit a single.

A trio of Guelph pitchers limited Barrie to six hits, all off starter Custodio who gave up two unearned runs in seven innings. He had 10 strikeouts and issued four walks.

Neither Yomar Concepcion nor Yuki Narita walked anyone in their one-inning stints. Concepcion struck out three of the four batters he faced while Narita had two strikeouts.

Royce Ando hit three singles for Barrie while Carson Burns had a triple and Canice Ejoh and Starlin Rodriguez each hit a single.

Evan Soules was charged with the loss for Barrie. He gave up four earned runs off seven hits and two walks in five innings.

The Royals got to reliever Brad Grieverson for six hits and three runs (one earned) in his two innings of work while Brandon Hillier surrendered an earned run off two hits in his inning on the mound. Soules had three strikeouts while Hillier had one.

The win leaves the Royals at 17-20 and in a tie with the Hamilton Cardinals (16-19) for fifth. The Toronto Maple Leafs are fourth at 17-16 and have four games in hand on Guelph.

Welland Jackfish lead the league at 35-25 while Barrie is second at 23-12 and Kitchener Panthers are third at 22-14. London Majors are seventh at 12-21 and Brantford Red Sox eighth at 7-27.

The game was the second consecutive home game for the Royals who have won six of their last eight games.

They’re to continue their four-game homestand with games Saturday against Kitchener and Tuesday against London. Game time is 7:30 p.m. each game.

The Royals have five games to go in their regular season, three at home.
