Royals, Red Sox share cellar after Brantford tops Guelph

GUELPH – The Guelph Royals find themselves in the basement of the Intercounty Baseball League with the Brantford Red Sox following a 4-2 loss to the Red Sox at Hastings Stadium Tuesday night.

Both teams sport 1-5 records.

For the Royals, it was their fifth consecutive setback as they haven’t won since taking their season opener 10-5 over the Hamilton Cardinals at Hamilton May 19.

For Brantford, it was the first win for the Red Sox since they recorded a 6-2 victory over Hamilton at Brantford’s Arnold Anderson Stadium July 13 of last year. Including playoffs, there were 26 losses in between the wins.

Brantford scored three runs in the first inning and added another one in the ninth when the Royals tossed the ball around, but were only charged with a single error.

Both of Guelph’s runs came in the seventh. Corey Morro hit a double and scored on a single by Brando Leroux and a Brantford error. Ethan Hammond was walked and a single by Conner Morro scored Leroux. Brantford changed pitchers, Hayden Stam taking over for Corey Fields, and that brought the rally to an end.

The Royals had runners on first and second with one out in the eighth, but that rally fizzled out with back-to-back fly outs.

The locals also got two on with one out in the ninth, bringing the potential winning run to bat, but nothing came of it thanks to a fly out and a strikeout.

The Royals stranded 14 runners during the game, three more than Brantford.

The hosts did have 11 hits with Noah Roberts getting a triple and a single and Conner Morro getting a double and a single. Evan Ashe added a double while J.D. Williams, Tristan Pompey, Jeff MacLeod and Corey Morro each hitting a single.

Chistian Kuzemka had a double and two singles for Brantford while Kieran Bowles had a double and a single. Matthew Fabian, Jeremie Veilleux and Iyad Ansari each hit a single.

Starter Jared Kennedy took the loss for the Royals as he surrendered three earned runs off five hits and three walks in three innings. He threw 73 pitches.

Ben Reid walked three and gave up a hit, but no runs, in two innings of work while Nelson Mercado and Brandon Deans each pitched two innings. Mercado had five strikeouts and a walk while Deans had four strikeouts and yielded two hits.

In all, Guelph pitchers threw 193 pitches, 122 for strikes, while Brantford hurlers tossed 162 pitches, 96 for strikes.

Jeremias Sucre, Brantford’s starter, picked up the win. He held the Royals scoreless through five innings despite giving up five hits and two walks. He had three strikeouts.

Fields (1 inning), Stam (2 2/3 innings) and Danny Howat (1/3 of an inning) each had a strikeout. Fields gave up two earned runs off four hits and a walk while Stam surrendered two hits and two walks and Howat was credited with a save after striking out the only batter he faced.

Kitchener Panthers (4-1) and Toronto Maple Leafs (5-2) are tied for the league lead while Hamilton (4-2) is third and followed by Welland Jackfish (3-2), London Majors (3-3), Barrie Baycats (2-3) and the Royals and Red Sox.

Next on the schedule for the Royals is a pair of games against Barrie. They’re to play in Barrie Thursday at 7:35 p.m. and at Hastings Stadium Saturday at 1 p.m.
