Royals, Spartans remain tied atop senior hoops loop

GUELPH – The Ross Royals and Centennial Spartans kept pace with one another atop the District 10 high school senior boys’ basketball standings as both posted wins Thursday as the league resumed play after the Christmas break and a snowout Tuesday.

The Royals and Spartans were to have met Tuesday, but that match has been postponed to next Wednesday.

Tuesday, Ross won each quarter as they downed the St. James Lions 85-54 and Centennial slipped by the Guelph CVI Green Gaels 54-50.

Bishop Macdonell Celtics entered the day tied for first, but a 61-56 loss to the host Lourdes Crusaders knocked them into a tie for third with the Crusaders.

At Ross, the Royals trailed after the opening couple of minutes, but rallied to lead 27-13 at the end of the first quarter. They extended the lead to 47-30 at halftime and 66-43 after the third quarter.

Andrew Becker and Ronan Robinson struck for 12 points apiece for Ross while Jonathan Wang had 11, Ishaan Dhanju had 10 and Drew Dunlop and Carter Wheeldon each netted eight.

Daidan Carter led all scorers as he collected 19 points for St. James while Gianfranz dela Fuente and Nathan Dobbins each had seven.

Ross and Centennial are both at 7-2 while Bishop Mac and Lourdes are both at 6-3, GCVI is at 5-4, Orangeville’s at 4-5, Centre Wellington’s at 1-8 and St. James is at 0-9.

Domenic Favaro hit for 19 points for Lourdes while Josh Skelhorn followed with 17 and Simon Porcellato collected 14.

Ben Dorling had 18 for Bishop Mac and Jackson Long and Hayden Schut each contributed nine.

 

Orangeville 51 Centre Wellington 46

Jisiah Guthrie had 23 points for Orangeville while B. Bettonvil chipped in with nine.

Tyler Holland had 15 for Centre Wellington and Gabe LeClair picked up 12.

 

Centennial 54 Guelph CVI 50

Junior Boys’ Basketball

St. James and Centre Wellington are tied for the lead at 8-1 and are followed by Ross at 6-3, Lourdes and Orangeville both at 4-5, Centennial at 3-6, Bishop Mac at 2-7 and GCVI at 1-8.

Jaden Thompson connected for 40 points for Bishop Mac while Mave Obasuyi had nine and Chayse Smith collected seven.

Jackson McGarr led Lourdes with 21 points while Lat Hiyabu had 11 and Jacob Manyoro netted six.

 

Centre Wellington 71 Orangeville 34

Jason Watkins struck for 23 points for Centre Wellington while Lucas Albano gathered 20.

A. Robotham had eight for Orangeville while M. McFarlane added six.

The loss was the first of the season for St. James.

Nash Dunlop led Ross with 22 points while Adam Dakkak added 19.

Hayden Khan had 22 points for St. James while Nick Melehes followed with 11.
