Second-half flurry lifts Gryphon soccer men to first win

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons connected for four goals in the second half as they dropped the Waterloo Warriors 5-1 for their first victory of the OUA men’s soccer league season.

Guelph’s second-half goals came in a span of 13 minutes with the first of the four coming eight minutes after the hosts had tied the score at 1-1.

Juliano Campedelli put the Gryphs ahead in the final minute of the opening half before Matheus Mello pulled Waterloo even six minutes into the second half.

Anthony Ostrun scored three of Guelph’s second-half goals while Ambrose Tinmouth, who had assisted on two of Ostrun’s goals, scored the game’s other goal.

Carter Robart had 12 saves in the Guelph net while Lorin-Alexander Lopez had nine for Waterloo.

The Gryphs outshot the Warriors 14-13 and both teams took eight corner kicks.

Waterloo was called for nine fouls to six for the Gryphs while the Warriors were also shown the yellow card three times while the Gryphs saw it once.

The win vaults the Gryphs out of the West Division basement into a tie for fifth with Waterloo. At 1-1-1, the Gryphs have two games in hand on the Warriors (1-3-1).

The Gryphs and Warriors are to meet again Sunday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. Game time is 3:15 p.m.
