Shamrocks face ousting after Game 3 loss to Wellesley

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks find themselves on the brink of elimination from the PJHL’s Doherty Division quarter-finals following a 6-3 loss to the Wellesley Applejacks Sunday at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

The Shamrocks scored the first goal of each period including the opening goal 15 seconds into the match. However, Wellesley led 3-1 at the end of the first period and 5-2 after the second.

The win gives Wellesley a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Hudson Weger, Owen Goetz and Riley Panagapka netted single goals for the Shamrocks while Alex Spencer assisted on two of the goals and Mitchell Smilsky, Josh Hillis and Weger each had one assist.

Kyle Baker connected for two goals for Hespeler while Tristan Huinink, Connor Doerbecker, Curtis Butler and Isiah Katsube each had one goal. Tristan Romany assisted on three of the goals while Koby Seiling, Connor Bradley and Katsube each had two assists and Justin McCombs had one assist.

Wellesley outshot Hespeler 40-25 and went 2-for-6 on its power play while the Shamrocks went 1-for-10.

Tyson Gustaw had 12 saves in the first period for Hespeler while Gavan Mask played the final two periods and had 22 saves. Noah Bender had 22 saves for Wellesley.

Game 4 is set for Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

If Hespeler wins Wednesday, Game 5 is to go Thursday at 7:45 p.m. at the Wellesley Community Centre.
