Shamrocks fall as they yield two in second, two in third

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks surrendered two goals in each of the final two periods as they suffered a 4-1 loss to the Wellesley Applejacks in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Thursday night at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

Liam Nelson’s 10th of the season was the lone goal for Hespeler. It came on a power play with 1:32 to go in the second period following a pair of goals by the Applejacks earlier in the period. Justin George and Braeden Tyler assisted on the goal.

Lincoln Walsh and Stuart Sinclair scored in the second period for Wellesley while Jake L’Heureux and Sinclair tallied in the third, Sinclair’s third-period marker being a shorthanded goal scored into an empty net.

Applejacks assists were registered by Jack Walmsley, Nolan Karger, Austin Stemmler, Owen Stoddard, Logan Crans and Isiah Katsube.

Wellesley outshot Hespeler 41-27 and went 1-for-4 on their power play while the Shamrocks were 1-for-8.

Lucas Hillert had 37 saves for the Shamrocks including one on a penalty shot in the scoreless first period. Tyson Gustaw had 26 saves for the Applejacks.

The Shamrocks are sixth in the Doherty Division at 8-17-1-0 and are a point up on the seventh-place Paris Titans (7-19-1-1). Wellesley is fifth at 10-13-1-0.

The Shamrocks are to play the second-place New Hamburg Firebirds (20-7-2-0) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Wilmot Recreation Complex in Baden and host the first-place Woodstock Navy Vets (22-4-2-0) Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.
