Hespeler Shamrocks fall behind early in loss to Wellesley

WELLESLEY – The Hespeler Shamrocks yielded four goals in the first period as they were downed 6-1 by the Wellesley Applejacks in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday at the Wellesley Township Recreation Centre.

Wellesley added a goal in the opening minute of the second period and another one early in the third while Hespeler’s lone goal came on a power play in the 14th minute of the second.

Jack Restauri scored that goal for the Shamrocks while Michael Boyle-Ricupero and Boden White assisted on the play.

Isiah Katsube and Connor Doerbecker tallied twice apiece for Wellesley while Kaelan McDougald and Jake L’Heureux added single goals. Getting one assist each were Carson Wickie, L’Heureux, Kian Harron, Doerbecker, Owen O’Donnell, Jack Walmsley, Logan Crans and Stuart Sinclair.

Wellesley outshot the Shamrocks 35-30, the five-shot difference coming in the first period as the teams took 22 shots apiece in the final two periods. The Applejacks were 2-for-8 on the power play while Hespeler was 1-for-9.

Goaltenders David Hanley of Hespeler and Tyson Gustaw of Wellesley each had 29 saves.

Doerbecker took two penalty shots in the game and didn’t score on either.

The result leaves Wellesley at 16-18-1-0 and Hespeler at 10-24-2-0.

The game was the first of a three-in-three weekend for the Shamrocks as they’re to play the Norwich Merchants (15-16-5-1) at Norwich’s NOR-DEL Arena Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and host the Woodstock Navy Vets (27-7-3-0) at the Hespeler Memorial Arena Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
