Shamrocks net three in middle period to top Norwich

CAMBRIDGE – Three goals in the second period stood up for the Hespeler Shamrocks as they edged the Norwich Merchants 3-2 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Sunday at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

The win put an end to a three-game losing streak for the Shamrocks.

After a scoreless first period, the Shamrocks scored their three goals in the second before Norwich’s Brandon Balazs responded with a pair of goals in the third.

Ryan Fraser, James Ramani and Boden White scored a goal apiece for the Shamrocks while single assists went to Liam Nelson, Riley Panagapka, Derek Taylor and Jack Restauri.

While Balazs scored both goals for Norwich, Nathan Murphy and Brenden Cattrysse each had an assist.

The Shamrocks outshot the Merchants 37-34 and each team scored a power-play goal, Hespeler on five power plays and Norwich on four.

Lucas Hillert had 32 saves for the hosts while Tanner Richardson had 34 for Norwich.

Woodstock Navy Vets lead the Doherty Division at 9-0-0-0 while the New Hamburg Firebirds are second at 7-3-0-0. The Wellesley Applejacks are at 4-3-0-0 while both the Shamrocks and Tavistock Braves are at 4-5-0-0, Norwich is at 2-6-1-0 and Paris Titans are at 1-7-1-0.

Hespeler and Norwich are to meet again at Norwich’s NOR-DEL Arena Friday at 8 p.m. and the Shamrocks are to host Paris at the Hespeler Memorial Arena Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
