Shamrocks out of playoffs, edged by Wellesley

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks were ousted from the PJHL playoffs when they were edged 3-2 by the Wellesley Applejacks Wednesday night at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

The result gave Wellesley a four-game sweep of the best-of-seven Doherty Division quarter-final series.

The Applejacks scored a pair of goals 40 seconds apart early in the first period and added a power-play goal in the second before the Shamrocks closed the gap with two goals in the third, the second one being a power-play marker with 2:27 to go.

Hudson Weger and Braeden Tyler scored for the Shamrocks while assists went to Mitchell Smilsky and Weger.

Isiah Katsube scored twice for Wellesley while Tristian Huinink had the other goal. Single assists were awarded to Dimitri Eleftheriadis, Connor Doerbecker, Koby Seiling, Kyle Baker and Adam Hoff.

Wellesley outshot Hespeler 36-23 and both teams had a power-play goal, the Applejacks on four power plays and the Shamrocks on six.

Gavan Mask had 33 saves for the Shamrocks while Noah Bender had 21 for Wellesley.

The Shamrocks had finished seventh in the division at 5-32-3-1 while the Applejacks were second at 31-7-2-2.

The Applejacks are to play the third-place Norwich Merchants (29-12-1-0) in the division semifinals while the first-place New Hamburg Firebirds (31-6-3-2) are to play the winner of the series between the fourth-place Tavistock Braves (21-15-3-2) and fifth-place Woodstock Navy Vets (18-21-1-1) in the other divisional semifinal.
