Slow start costly as Mount Forest Patriots can’t recover

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots fell behind early and just couldn’t catch up as they suffered an 8-5 loss to the Hanover Barons in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Sunday at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The Patriots surrendered six goals in the first period on their way to their third loss in as many league outings. One of the losses was in overtime.

Hanover led 6-1 at the end of the first period before the Patriots closed the gap to 6-5 by the seven-minute mark of the second. However, the hosts wouldn’t score again while Hanover added a pair of goals in the third.

Of the 13 goals scored in the game, 12 were scored at one end of the rink.

Matt McLellan and Brody Leblanc netted two goals apiece for the Patriots while Jaxon Gawel scored the other goal. McLellan and Cameron Lytle each had two assists while Leblanc had one.

Kyle Maloney fired in a pair of goals for Hanover while single goals were scored by Ryan Colquhoun, Drayton Howell, Payton McIsaac, Cohen McIsaac, Curtis Arnold and Aaron Dukeshire. Howell and Arnold each had two assists while Patrick Brown, Ryan Goetz, Maloney and Dukeshire had one apiece.

The Patriots outshot the Barons 31-29 and went 1-for-5 on their power play while Hanover went 1-for-2.

Nolan Brown started in net for the Patriots and had six saves when he was replaced by Michael Purkhart after Hanover’s fourth goal at 13:04 of the first period. Purkhart went the rest of the way and he registered 15 saves. Lander Hartley had 26 saves for Hanover.

The win keeps Hanover atop the Pollock Division as the division’s lone unbeaten team at 4-0-0-0. They’re followed by the Wingham Ironmen and Walkerton Capitals, each at 3-1-0-0, Fergus Whalers at 2-1-0-1, Kincardine Bulldogs at 1-1-1-1, Mitchell Hawks at 1-3-0-0, the Patriots at 0-2-1-0 and Goderich Flyers at 0-3-0-0.

The Patriots are to host Goderich at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex Saturday at 8 p.m.
