Spartans seniors hang on for opening girls’ hoop victory

GUELPH – The two-time champion Centennial Spartans withstood a late surge by the Bishop Macdonell Celtics to open the District 10 high school senior girls’ basketball season Tuesday.

The Spartans led 16-12 at the end of the first quarter before extending their lead to 36-22 by halftime. Centennial was ahead 46-33 at the end of the third quarter before the Celtics scored the first nine points of the final quarter to cut the gap to four points. However, they wouldn’t get any closer.

Hayley M. led Centennial with 28 points while Natasa S. added 12.

Sydney R. had 20 for Bishop Mac and Talya K. followed with 13.

 

Guelph CVI 49 St. James 32

Ally O. paced GCVI with 14 points while Sam A. collected 11.

Arielle B. had a game-high 28 for St. James.

 

Ross 55 Centre Wellington 26

A. Blashuk had 17 points for Ross.

Centre Wellington received eight from Natalie Abra.

 

Orangeville 65 Lourdes 25

Emma Firth had 26 points for Orangeville while Ayla Corrigale netted 17.

Olivia Doucette had 10 for Lourdes.

 

Junior Girls’ Basketball

Guelph CVI 35 St. James 27

Judge connected for 14 points for GCVI while Gerridy added seven and Rankin had six.

Jones gathered seven for St. James and Lucchese scored six.

 

Ross 53 Centre Wellington 37

Alex Blashuk connected for 15 points for Ross.

Sydney Sellers had 14 for Centre Wellington.

 

Lourdes 34 Orangeville 30

J. Omot’s 19 points led Lourdes.

L. Fischer had 10 for Orangeville while Carlee Crang had eight.

 

Bishop Macdonell 42 Centennial 16

Adjah Z. had 10 points for Bishop Mac while Sophia A. followed with six.

Camryn S. had six for Centennial and Addison P. picked up four.
