Spartans sweep Crusaders in volleyball doubleheader

GUELPH — The Centennial Spartans moved into second place in the District 10 high school senior girls’ volleyball play Monday as they swept the Lourdes Crusaders in the league’s first game back from the two-week exam break.

The Spartans won 25-5, 25-12, 25-16.

The Guelph CVI Green Gaels were a perfect 12-0 entering the break and had already clinched a first-place finish. Centennial’s second at 9-3 while the St. James Lions are third at 7-4. They’re followed by the Ross Royals at 6-5, Bishop Macdonell Celtics at 6-6, Centre Wellington Falcons and Orangeville Bears both at 3-8 and the Lourdes Crusaders at 0-12.

This is the final week of the league’s regular season and St. James, Ross, Centre Wellington and Orangeville each have three games left to play while the other four have two games apiece.

The playoffs are to begin Monday with the quarter-finals. GCVI is to host Lourdes in one of those games while the other three have yet to be decided.

The semifinals are to go next Wednesday (Feb. 14) and the semifinal winners will have plenty of time to prepare for the championship match as it’s scheduled to be played the following Tuesday (Feb. 20) at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre starting around 8 p.m. It’ll follow the junior final that is to go at 6 p.m.

 

Junior Girls’ Volleyball

Centennial defeated Lourdes 3-1 in Monday’s lone match.

The Spartans won 25-19, 23-25, 25-19, 25-22.

Bishop Mac leads at 11-1 and are followed by Centennial at 10-2, Ross at 8-3, Centre Wellington at 6-5, Orangeville at 5-6, St. James at 3-8, GCVI at 3-9 and Lourdes at 0-12.

As in the senior league, the quarter-finals are to be played Monday with the semifinals set for Feb. 14 and the final for Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. at the GGAC.

Lourdes is the only team locked into a finishing position as the Crusaders will finish eighth and take on the first-place finisher in the quarter-finals.
