Storm complete opening weekend with win over Windsor

WINDSOR – The Guelph Storm recorded their second 4-2 victory in as many OHL regular-season outings this weekend as they doubled the Windsor Spitfires Saturday at Windsor’s WFCU Centre.

The Storm scored three consecutive goals in the second period to claim the win.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period while the game’s scoring was complete by the end of the second.

Hunter McKenzie, Zackary Sandhu, Jett Luchanko and Vilmer Alriksson collected the goals for the Storm. Charlie Paquette had a pair of assists while Michael Buchinger, Ryan McGuire and Jake Karabela each had one.

Liam Greentree and Aidan Castle had a goal apiece for Windsor. Oliver Peer picked up an assist.

The Storm outshot the Spitfires 31-29 while both teams had four power plays and the Storm netted the lone power-play goal of the game.

Both goaltenders, Brayden Gillespie of the Storm and Joey Costanzo of Windsor, made 27 saves.

Guelph, Kitchener Rangers, Soo Greyhounds and London Knights are tied atop the Western Conference with 2-0-0-0 records. Saginaw Spirit, Sarnia Sting and Owen Sound Attack are each at 1-1-0-0 while the Erie Otters, Windsor and Flint Firebirds are each at 0-2-0-0.

The Storm have a pair of games next weekend as they’re to host Erie Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre and play the Knights at London’s Budweiser Gardens Saturday at 7 p.m.
