Storm nipped by Mississauga in OT in preseason opener

MISSISSAUGA – The Guelph Storm yielded a pair of goals in the shootout as they were edged 3-2 by the Mississauga Steelheads in their OHL preseason opener Friday night at the Paramount Fine Foods centre.

While the Steelheads scored twice on goaltender Ethan Kowatsch, the Storm failed to score on Mississauga’s Jack Ivankovic.

Kowatsch, a 2021 draft pick of the Steelheads who was obtained by the Storm about a year ago and played just over 14 minutes of a Storm game last October, had stopped all 10 shots he faced in the third period. Import draft pick Damian Slavik had 18 saves in the first two periods.

The Storm never trailed in regulation time as they scored the lone goal of the first period and their second-period goal was sandwiched between a pair of goals by the hosts. The third was scoreless.

Charlie Paquette and Gavin Grundner scored for Guelph while Wil McFadden assisted on both goals and Vilmer Alriksson and Rylan Singh collected one assist apiece.

Justin DeZoete and Luke Misa replied with goals for Mississauga and Lucas Karmiris had a single assist.

Guelph outshot Mississauga 35-31 and went 1-for-5 on its power play while holding the Steelheads scoreless on four power plays. The Storm won 38 of the game’s 58 faceoffs.

Including Kowatsch, the Storm had 13 players in their lineup who played in the OHL last season while the Steelheads had 14.

The two teams are to meet again Sunday at the North Dumfries Community Centre in Ayr. Game time is 2 p.m.

The Storm are also to host the Niagara IceDogs next Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.

Guelph’s regular season is to open at home Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. against the Owen Sound Attack.
