Third-quarter scoring powers Gryphon field hockey women to win

LONDON – The Guelph Gryphons scored three goals in the third quarter and then held off a fourth-quarter comeback attempt by the Western Mustangs to post a 4-3 victory in OUA women’s field hockey play Sunday at Western’s Mustangs Field.

Guelph’s third-quarter trio of goals broke a 1-1 deadlock and came in a span of 11 minutes. It started a minute after Western had tied the score.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Gryphs netted the lone goal of the second quarter and they led 4-1 after the third quarter. Western scored twice in the final quarter, but couldn’t get the equalizer.

Sophie Pomeroy, Eva Cuddihy, Delaney Jacklin and Harper Griffin collected a goal apiece for Guelph.

Katie-Jo Smith, Olivia Hledin and Anna Costanzo scored for Western.

There were no assists awarded in the game.

Shots and penalty corners were not recorded.

Maryam Maamoun was in net for the Gryphs while Alyssa Evans was the keeper for Western.

The win was the third in a row for the Gryphs and leaves them second in the West Division at 3-2-1. Waterloo Warriors are first at 5-1-0 while McMaster Marauders are third at 2-4-0 and Western is fourth at 1-5-0 after suffering their fourth consecutive loss.

The Gryphs have four games left in their regular season – two against McMaster and two against Waterloo.

They’re to play the Marauders at McMaster’s Alumni Field Wednesday at 7 p.m. and host McMaster at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Friday at 7 p.m.
