Thistles on verge of advancing to conference semifinals

FERGUS – An unassisted goal by Brodie Rice in overtime put the Fergus Thistles a win away from advancing to the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League Western Conference’s semifinals as they edged the Barrie Bombers 7-6 at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex Tuesday night.

The goal scored three minutes into overtime completed a comeback for the Thistles and allowed them to overcome yielding four goals, two while shorthanded, in a span of 6:05 late in the second period.

The win gives Fergus a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series.

Barrie led 2-0 at the end of the first period, its second goal coming with a second to go in the period. The teams scored four times apiece in the second while Fergus scored both of the third period’s goals.

Evan McDougall connected for a pair of goals for the Thistles while Rice, Aiden McDougall, Blake Harrison, Logan Joyes and Nate Renaud netted single goals. Renaud had three assists while Eddie McDonald had two and Derek Kurtz, Joyes, Spencer Aitchison and Evan McDougall had one apiece.

Myles Shorey tallied twice for Barrie while Graham Nash, Carter Barrie, Andrew Dafoe and Tye Burke each scored once. Carter Beecroft and Bo Bitzer each gathered three assists while Jack Fletcher and Shorey each had one.

The Bombers outshot the Thistles 57-49 and Barrie had two power-play goals, one more than Fergus.

Carter Billings had 51 saves for the Thistles while Kalib Anglin-Ramm had 42 for Barrie.

The Bombers had finished third in the conference at 11-7-0 while the Thistles were sixth at 5-13-0.

Game 3 of the best-of-five series is set for Friday at Barrie’s Peggy Hill Team Community Centre. Game time is 8 p.m.

If a fourth game is necessary, it’s to be played Saturday at 7 p.m. in Fergus.

It’ll be a busy weekend for the teams if the series goes its five-game limit as the fifth game is to be played Sunday at 2 p.m. in Barrie.
