Thistles oust Barrie to advance to conference semifinals

FERGUS – The Fergus Thistles are off to the Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League Western Conference semifinals after eliminating the Barrie Bombers Saturday night at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

A goal by Logan Joyes at 4:44 of the second overtime period gave the Thistles a 7-6 victory in the game and a 3-1 win in the best-of-five series.

The Thistles never trailed in the game, but did lead by two goals only to see the Bombers claw their way back into a stalemate. In fact, Barrie battled back five time to tie the score, the fifth time coming in the first 10-minute overtime period.

Fergus led 3-2 at the end of the first period and 4-2 after the second, but the Bombers came back to knot the game at 5-5 at the end of regulation time.

Nate Renaud had a hat trick for the Thistles while Aiden McDougall, Joyes, Cooper Fleet and Evan McDougall scored the other goals. Aiden McDougall collected three assists while Rory Peters, Levi Wilson and Evan McDougall had two apiece and Tye Sanderson and Renaud had one each.

Cameron MacKinnon fired home three goals for Barrie while Myles Shorey, Graham Nash and Tye Burke added single goals. Carter Barrie and Carter Beecroft had two assists apiece while Bo Bitzer, MacKinnon and Burke each had one.

The Thistles outshot the Bombers 54-47 and they had a power-play goal while Barrie had two power-play goals and a shorthanded marker. Every Barrie goal was listed on the scoresheet as an empty-net goal.

Carter Billings was in net for Fergus while Kalib Anglin-Ramm was in goal for Barrie.

The Thistles had completed the regular season in sixth place in the conference at 5-13-0 while Barrie was third at 11-7-0.

Fergus is to advance to play the Wilmot Wild in the conference semifinals. The Wild had a bye in the conference quarter-finals after finishing first at 16-2-0.

The other conference semifinal has the Orangeville Northmen playing the Six Nations Stealth. In the conference quarter-finals, Orangeville edged the Brantford Warriors 3-2 and Six Nations swept the Halton Hills Bulldogs in three games.

Orangeville had finished second in the conference at 11-7-0, Six Nations was fourth at 10-8-0, Halton Hills was fifth at 5-12-1 and Brantford was seventh at 4-13-1.

Dates for the conference semifinals have not been announced.
