WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons opened their OUA men’s rugby season with a 33-12 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks Saturday at Waterloo’s University Stadium.

The game was a rematch of last year’s OUA final won 28-19 by the Gryphs on the University of Guelph’s grass field in the soccer complex.

Saturday, the Gryphs scored the final three tries of the game to break a 12-12 tie.

Those three tries were part of a second half that saw the teams combine for five tries after they’d scored one apiece in the first half.

Guelph led 7-5 at halftime thanks to a Kobe Faust convert of a Jack Morris try, in the 13th minute.

Evan Walsh scored a try for Laurier in 31st minute, but it went unconverted.

Faust extended the lead for the Gryphs with an unconverted try three minutes into the second half, but Laurier pulled even on a try by Josh Tinney and convert by Adam McNee five minutes later.

Connor McKinney’s try in the 17th minute of the second half that was converted by Faust was the first of the final three tries and it put Guelph ahead for good.

Faust converted his own try eight minutes later while Guelph’s final try, a penalty try that included the convert, came with seven minutes to play.

Next up for the Gryphs is their home opener against the Trent Excalibur (72-7 losers to the Western Mustangs Saturday) next Saturday (Sept. 16) at Varsity Field. Game time is 3:30 p.m.

That game is to be the second game in the Gryphon Rugby Day doubleheader as the Gryphon women (2-0) are to host the Toronto Varsity Blues (1-1) at 1 p.m.
