Three goals in a row give Gryphon hockey men first win

GUELPH – Three consecutive goals turned a single-goal deficit into the first win of the OUA men’s hockey league’s regular season for the Guelph Gryphons Saturday night at the Gryphon Centre.

A 4-2 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks was also the first win in league play for first-year Gryphon head coach Josh Dixon.

Laurier led 2-1 at the end of the first period before Jacob Winterton and Nolan Forster scored in the middle frame to give Guelph a 3-2 lead at the end of the second.

Jonah De Simone, who also scored in the first period, netted the lone goal of the third period – an empty-netter with 29 seconds to play.

Nolan DeGurse, Anthony Tabak and Luke Kutkevicius each had two assists for the Gryphs while Tristan De Jong and Ethan Doyle had one apiece.

Evan Benwell and Callum Chisholm scored for Laurier while assists went to Caleb Petrie, Samuel Williamson, Isaac Sooklal and Patrick Brown.

Laurier outshot the Gryphs 34-29 and went 1-for-2 on their power play while the hosts were scoreless on two power plays.

Tanner Wickware had 32 saves for Guelph while Christian Propp had 26 for Laurier.

The win lifts the Gryphs to 1-2-0-0 in league play while Laurier falls to 1-3-0-0.

The game was the second of four consecutive home games for the Gryphs. They’re to complete that homestand at the Gryphon Centre with games against the RMC Paladins (1-1-0-1) Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Queen’s Gaels (4-0-0-0) Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
