Top two win in quarter-finals, last two champs ousted

GUELPH – While the teams that finished in the top two positions at the end of the regular season did the expected in the District 4/10 high school girls’ field hockey quarter-finals, the last two championship winners were upset Wednesday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The first-place Ross Royals defeated the eighth-place Guelph CVI Green Gaels 5-1 while the second-place Centennial Spartans downed the seventh-place Wellington Heights Wolverines 7-1.

The sixth-place Centre Wellington Falcons beat the third-place Orangeville Bears 3-1 while the fifth-place Bishop Macdonell Celtics dropped the fourth-place Centre Dufferin Royals 4-1.

Orangeville won the league title last year while Centre Dufferin claim top honours in 2021.

While the 2020 season was cancelled due to the pandemic, Ross won the previous four championships.

Wednesday’s winners advance to the league semifinals Monday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. Ross is to play Centre Wellington at 2:30 p.m. while Centennial is to play Bishop Mac at 4 p.m.

Monday’s winners are to play in the championship match next Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Sidney Wright had a pair of goals for Ross while Amanda Sarabura, Annabelle Docksteader and Amber Spira each had a goal.

Margaux Destacks scored for GCVI.

 

Centennial 7 Wellington Heights 1

Abigail Milne and Brynley Huether tallied twice apiece for Centennial while single goals were added by Sydney Huether, Tristan Helps and Clara Stanley.

Hailey Schieck scored for Wellington Heights.

 

Centre Wellington 3 Orangeville 1

Mielle McKnight rifled in a pair of goals while Maartje Verheijen also scored.

Nicola Adams had the goal for Orangeville.

 

Bishop Macdonell 4 Centre Dufferin 1

Isabelle Peverley had two goals for Bishop Mac while Riley Keenan and Reese Washington also scored.

Courtney Forbes had the goal for Centre Dufferin.
