Toronto scores six-run innings to topple Guelph Royals

TORONTO – A pair of six-run innings proved to be the undoing of the Guelph Royals as their three-game Intercounty Baseball League winning streak came to an end with a 14-10 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Dominico Field at Christie Pits Sunday.

The two teams combined for 24 runs and 36 hits in an errorless game. Every player who went up to bat had at least one hit in the game. Other than pitching changes, neither team made any substitutions.

The Royals led 3-2 after 2½ innings before their hosts shot ahead 8-3 in the bottom of the third. The locals clawed back to narrow the gap to 8-7 after 5½ innings before Toronto pulled away with their second six-run inning. The Royals added three runs in the seventh to complete the scoring in the game.

Ethan Hammond had four singles and a stolen base for the Royals while Brando Leroux hit three singles, was hit by a pitch, stole a base and drove in three runs. Corey Morro had a double and a single and knocked in three runs while Kyle Kush hit two singles to give him seven hits in three games this season. He had 14 in 23 games last season.

Noah Roberts hit a double while Chris Robinson hit a single, scored two runs, was walked twice and stole a base in his debut with the Royals after signing on a couple of days earlier. J.D. Williams, Mike Cecchetto and Brendan Keys each added a single.

For the Maple Leafs, Johnathan Solazzo hit a solo homer and two singles and was walked twice while Dan Marra hit a double and two singles and stole two bases and Ryan Burnside added three singles. Justin Marra also hit a solo homer and a double and Jesse Hodges hit a two-run homer and a double. Connor Lewis hit two doubles and Greg Carrington, batting ninth in the order, drove in four runs with two singles and he also stole a base. Jose Vinicio hit two singles and Jordan Castaldo hit one.

Guelph starter Kyle Thomas took the loss after he yielded eight earned runs off 11 hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings while Yuki Narita relieved for the final 3 1/3 innings. He was tagged for six earned runs off nine hits and a walk. Narita had five strikeouts and Thomas had two.

Ryan Wells picked up the win for Toronto as he held the Royals scoreless during his stint of 1 2/3 innings. He yielded three hits, didn’t walk anyone or strike anyone out after taking over for starter Daniel Procopio who surrendered seven earned runs off nine hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings. He had three strikeouts. James Wilson pitched an inning and gave up three earned runs off a hit and three walks before giving the ball to Wilgenis Alvarado for the final two innings. Alvarado kept the Royals scoreless during his time on the mound despite yielding three hits. He also had five strikeouts.

Welland Jackfish lead the league at 9-2 and are followed by Toronto at 8-5, Kitchener Panthers and Hamilton Cardinals each at 7-5, Barrie Baycats at 5-5, London Majors at 4-6, the Royals at 4-8 and Brantford Red Sox at 2-10.

The Royals are to host Welland Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium.
