Two late goals sink Fergus Whalers in preseason finale

PARKHILL – The Fergus Whalers yielded the final two goals of their final PJHL preseason match Tuesday as they were handed a 7-5 setback by the North Middlesex Stars at the North Middlesex and District Arena.

After trailing 5-1 at the end of the second period, the Whalers pulled even with four goals in the first eight minutes of the third. However, the host Stars jumped back into the lead 49 seconds after Fergus had tied the score.

North Middlesex had scored both of the game’s first-period goals while the Whalers netted their first goal with 3:52 to go in the second period. The Stars had scored four times by then and added another goal in the final minute of the period.

Ty Anselmini led the Whalers as he was involved in all five goals, scoring two of them and assisting on the other three. The other goals were scored by Jack McDonald, Boden Brimmell and Ryan Oakes while Riley Broderick and Oakes each had two assists. Single assists were awarded to McDonald and Campbell Hobson.

Caleb Musselman scored twice for North Middlesex while Nick Bannister, Noah Glover, Marcus Tennes, Ethan Tichenoff and Brayden Heessels. Logan Lawrence, Heessels and Jacob Habib each had two assists while Zackary Vanderwal, Bannister, Glover, Kennes, Tichenoff, Ty Morrison and Ryan Marshall each had one.

The Stars outshot the Whalers 40-39 with Fergus getting 22 of its shots in the third period. The Whalers were also 3-for-12 on their power play while North Middlesex was 2-for-5.

Bradley Boville had 33 saves in the Fergus net while Gordie O’Dwyer had 34 for North Middlesex.

Of the 91 minutes in penalties issued in the game, 44 were assessed in the third period.

The Whalers complete their preseason with a win and three losses. They’re to start their inaugural season Saturday with a game against the Mount Forest Patriots at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex. Game time is 8 p.m.

The home opener at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex is set for Sunday at 3 p.m. against the Mitchell Hawks.
