Undefeated Gryphon rugby men run over Waterloo

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons kept their perfect record on the OUA men’s rugby season as they clouted the Waterloo Warriors 71-6 at Varsity Field Friday night.

The Gryphs have won all four of their league outings.

The hosts opened Friday’s game with two tries in the first seven minutes of the game and they limited Waterloo to a pair of penalty kicks, both in the first half when the Gryphs jumped out to a 33-6 lead by the intermission.

The longest the Gryphs went without scoring a try was 23 minutes from the 28th minute of the first half to the 11th minute of the second half.

Kobe Faust, Joshua Henry and Jack Morris each scored two tries while Ewen Curry, Owen Williams, Stephen Trollip and Oliver Alpe each added one try. The Gryphs also had a team try and eight converts.

The Gryphs lead the league at 4-0-0 with four bonus points for a total of 20 points. Waterloo is second at 3-2-0 with two bonus points for 14. They’re followed by the Brock Badgers (2-1-0, 3 bonus points, 11 points), Laurier Golden Hawks (2-2-0, 3 bonus points, 11 points), Queen’s Gaels (2-1-0, 1 bonus point, 9 points), Western Mustangs (1-1-2, 1 bonus point, 9 points), Toronto Varsity Blues (2-2-0, 1 bonus point, 9 points), Trent Excalibur (2-2-0, 8 points), McMaster Marauders (1-3-0, 1 bonus point, 5 points), RMC Paladins (1-2-0, 4 points), York Lions (0-4-0, 0 points).

The Gryphs are to play the Marauders at McMaster’s Ron Joyce Stadium next Saturday at 3 p.m. and wrap up their regular season by hosting Western at Varsity Field Oct. 21 at 3 p.m.
