PETERBOROUGH – Guelph United took a huge step toward clinching a playoff berth in League1 Ontario Men’s Premier soccer play Saturday when they blanked Electric City 3-0 on the Sir Sandford Fleming College field.

However, the playoff berth isn’t secured as five of the 17 teams behind United in the standings can finish ahead of them.

United scored once in the first half and twice in the second half for the win while goalkeeper Carter Robart recorded his seventh clean sheet of the season. Each of the top four teams in the standings – Scrosoppi FC of Milton, Vaughan Azzurri, Blue Devils FC of Oakville and Guelph United have allowed an average of exactly one goal against this season.

Jared Agyemang netted the game winner for United midway through the first half.

Leo Shrimpton added Guelph’s second goal 12 minutes into the second half while Cole Fernandez completed the scoring 20 minutes after that.

Scrosoppi leads at 14-3-0 while Vaughan Azzurri are at 12-2-3 and the Blue Devils are at 12-3-3.

Of the teams that can mathematically finish ahead of Guelph United, Simcoe County Rovers are at 11-4-1, Alliance United FC are at 9-3-6, Electric City are at 9-5-4 and North Toronto Nitros and Burlington SC are both at 9-5-3.

United have two home games left on their regular season. They’re to host Woodbridge Strikers (6-6-5) Aug. 13 at Centennial Bowl and ProStars FC (5-9-4) there Aug. 20. Both matches carry 5:30 p.m. game times.
