United’s lone goal good for win over Vaughan Azzurri

GUELPH – Guelph United connected for the game’s lone goal in the 11th minute as they slipped by Vaughan Azzurri 1-0 in League1 Ontario Men’s Premier soccer play Sunday at the Centennial Bowl.

Dion Stergiotis scored the goal as United bounced back from their first loss of the season suffered four days earlier to Sigma FC of Mississauga by handing Azzurri their first loss of the season.

The goal was the first of the season for Stergiotis.

Carter Robart had the clean sheet in net for United, his fourth of the season.

With the win, United leapfrogs Azzurri into a tie with Sigma for fifth place.

Blue Devils FC of Oakville and Milton’s Scrosoppi FC are tied for the league lead with 24 points apiece. The Blue Devils have a game in hand at 7-0-1 and are the only undefeated team in the loop while Scrosoppi are at 8-2-0. They’re followed by the North Toronto Nitros at 7-2-2, Simcoe County Rovers at 7-3-1, United and Sigma both at 6-1-3, Azzurri at 6-1-2, Burlington SC at 6-4-1, Alliance United at 5-2-3, Electric City at 5-3-2, ProStars at 5-4-2, Woodbridge Strikers at 3-3-5, Windsor City at 4-4-1, Darby FC at 3-6-1, North Mississauga at 2-4-3, Hamilton United at 2-6-3, St. Catharines Roma at 2-7-1, FC London at 1-6-2, BVB IA Waterloo at 1-9-0, Master’s FA at 0-7-1 and Unionville Milliken at 0-11-1.

Next up for United is a game against Darby FC at the Whitby Soccer Centre Dome Friday at 8 p.m. and they’re to host Windsor City at the Centennial Bowl June 27 at 8 p.m.
