Volleyball championship pairings decided in District 10

GUELPH – The championship game combatants in District 10 high school senior and junior girls’ volleyball have been set thanks to results of Wednesday’s semifinals.

Guelph CVI Green Gaels and Centennial Spartans are to play in the senior final while the Centre Wellington Falcons and Bishop Macdonell Celtics are to battle in the junior final.

The championship games are to be played Tuesday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre. Junior final is to start the championship doubleheader at 6 p.m. while the senior final is to follow around 8 p.m.

 

Senior Girls’ Volleyball

Guelph CVI swept the Ross Royals 3-0 in one of the semifinals Wednesday while Centennial downed the St. James 3-1 in the other one.

GCVI won 25-19, 25-14, 25-6 while Centennial won 25-16, 25-17, 26-28, 25-16.

The semifinals featured the teams that finished in the top four at the end of the regular season as GCVI was first at 15-0, Centennial second at 11-3, St. James third at 10-4 and Ross fourth at 9-5.

The Gaels swept both of their regular-season matches as they won 3-0 at Centennial Dec. 5 and 3-0 at GCVI Jan. 11.

GCVI will enter the final on a four-season sweep of league titles as they won last year and also from 2018 to 2020. The 2021 and 2022 finals fell victim to the pandemic.

Centennial last claimed league honours in 2016 when the Spartans won for the fourth time in six seasons.

 

Junior Girls’ Volleyball

In Wednesday’s semifinals, Centre Wellington swept Centennial 3-0 and Bishop Mac defeated Ross 3-1.

The Falcons beat the Spartans 25-21, 25-22, 25-22 while the Celtics bounced the Royals 25-8, 19-25, 25-22, 25-15.

Bishop Mac finished first at the end of the regular season at 13-1 while Centennial was second at 10-4, Centre Wellington third at 9-5 and Ross fourth at 8-6.

The Celtics and Falcons split their regular-season games, Bishop Mac winning 3-1 at Centre Wellington Nov. 30 and the Falcons winning 3-2 at Bishop Mac Jan. 15.

Bishop Mac last won the junior title in 2019 while Centre Wellington last won it in 2007.
