Westside’s first win costs Wolverines second place

ORANGEVILLE – Westside Thunder played spoilers of sorts Tuesday when the District 4 high school girls’ hockey league completed its regular season with six games at the Alder Street Arena in Orangeville.

The Thunder scored their first win of the season, a 3-2 victory over the Wellington Heights Wolverines and that result prevented the Wellington Heights Wolverines from finishing second in the four-team league’s final standings.

Centre Dufferin Royals finished first with a 9-3-0 (W-L-T) record while the Norwell Varsity Reds were second at 6-3-3, Wellington Heights third at 5-4-3 and Westside fourth at 1-11-0.

Had the Wolverines ended the regular season in a tie with Norwell, Wellington Heights would’ve won a tiebreaker as the Wolverines had a win over the Varsity Reds in one of the four meetings between the teams. The other three finished in ties.

Playoffs are to begin Feb. 21 with the semifinals as Centre Dufferin is to host Westside in Shelburne at 1:30 p.m. and Norwell is to host Wellington Heights in Palmerston at 2 p.m.
