Whalers nip Mitchell for another opening-weekend win

FERGUS – The Fergus Whalers completed a near perfect start to their inaugural PJHL season Sunday afternoon when they nipped the Mitchell Hawks 5-4 in their home opener at the Centre Wellington District Community Sportsplex.

That victory followed a 2-1 win in overtime over the Mount Forest Patriots in Mount Forest Saturday night.

The Whalers never trailed Sunday, although Mitchell twice rallied to tie the score.

Fergus led 2-0 midway through the first period, but the score was deadlocked 2-2 at the end of the period. The Whalers scored midway through the second before the Hawks tied it with a power-play goal just over three and a half minutes later.

The Whalers scored twice in the third for the win, although Mitchell narrowed the gap to a single goals with just under eight minutes to go in the final period.

Ty Anselmini had a hat trick for Fergus while Joshua Russell and Jett Morningstar, with the eventual game-winner, also scored. Jack McDonald had three assists while single assists were awarded to Morningstar, Nolan Burnside, Ryan McDougall, JJ Lavigne and Anselmini.

Isaac Nickel led Mitchell with a pair of goals while Cole Humphrey and former Mount Forest Patriot Ben Tenhag scored once apiece. Brady Brezynskie had two assists while Nickel, Callan Ferguson, Dawson Dietz, Callum McMann and Andrew Gysbers each had one.

Mitchell outshot the Whalers 40-34 and went 4-for-8 on its power play while Fergus went 2-for-6.

Bradley Boville had 36 saves for Fergus while Joshua Jacklin had 29 for Mitchell.

The result leaves Fergus at 2-0-0-0 and Mitchell at 0-2-0-0.

The Whalers are to play the Wingham Ironmen (1-1-0-0) at the North Huron Wescast Community Centre in Wingham Friday at 8 p.m. and host the Kincardine Bulldogs (1-0-1-0) at the Centre Wellington District Community Sportsplex Sunday at 3 p.m.
