Whalers yield final two goals in loss to Mitchell Hawks

ARTHUR – The Fergus Whalers yielded a pair of goals in the final 11 minutes of the game as they dropped a 5-3 decision to the Mitchell Hawks in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at the Arthur and Area Community Centre.

Mitchell scored the first three goals of the game before the Whalers came back with three in a row, the third one coming 3:17 into the final period.

Mitchell led 2-0 at the end of the first period and 3-2 after the second.

Ty Anselmini, Boden Brimmell and Jacob Lesser scored the goals for Fergus while Kyle Parsons and Anselmini each had two assists and Campbell Hobson and goaltender Bradley Boville had one apiece.

Scoring for Mitchell were Ben Tenhag, Ethan Pearce, Isaac Nickel, Callum McMann and Hayden Hessel. Wyatt Connelly and Nolan Gagnier had two assists each and Callan Ferguson and Carter Musselman had one each.

Mitchell outshot Fergus 50-49 and both teams had two power-play goals, Mitchell on five power plays and Fergus on eight.

Tomas Brintnell had 46 saves for the Hawks and Boville had 45 for the Whalers.

With the win Mitchell, sixth in the Pollock Division at 6-9-2-1, gains a bit of space on seventh-place Fergus (3-11-2-2).

Next up for the Whalers is a game next Friday against the Walkerton Capitals, fourth at 9-5-1-1, at the Walkerton Community Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
