Win moves Eagles into second in D4 senior hoops standings

FERGUS – The Emmanuel Christian Eagles leapfrogged the Centre Dufferin Royals in the District 4 high school senior girls’ basketball standings Wednesday with a 39-24 victory on their home court.

The teams got off to a slow start before the Eagles grabbed a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Emmanuel Christian was up 8-4 at the end of the first quarter, 15-6 at halftime and 27-16 after the third quarter.

The visiting Royals rallied in the first three and a half minutes of the final quarter as they got the gap down to six points, but were held to two points the rest of the way as the Eagles pulled away again.

Emma Vanleeuwen led Emmanuel Christian with 10 points while Alexis Taekama had eight, Robyn deJonge added seven and Henrietta Thalen chipped in with five.

Callista Daly had eight points for Centre Dufferin while Ashley Valade collected six and Keira Harley contributed four.

The win leaves Emmanuel Christian second in the six-team league standings at 3-1. Westside Thunder lead at 3-0 while the Erin Raiders are at 2-1, Centre Dufferin’s at 2-2, Wellington Heights Wolverines are at 0-2 and Norwell Varsity Reds are at 0-4.
