Wingham hands Fergus Whalers their first setback

WINGHAM – The Fergus Whalers suffered their first loss of the Provincial Junior Hockey League season as they were downed 4-1 by the Wingham Ironmen at the North Huron Wescast Community Centre Friday night.

The Whalers previously had a pair of victories, one in overtime, to start their inaugural season.

Wingham scored in each period for the win as the Ironmen led 1-0 after the first and 2-0 after the second.

The hosts built their lead to 4-0 in the third before Keegan Clarke scored a power-play goal for Fergus with 6:55 to go. Boden Brimmell and Conner Bradley assisted on the play.

Owen Rahn had two goals for Wingham while the others were scored by Nigel Kreager and Tyson Fischer. Single assists were awarded to Brandon Bishop, Noah Wettlaufer, Tayt Bramhill, Ethan Smith, Nate Bloemberg and Coleson Fischer.

Wingham outshot Fergus 35-23 and went 1-for-4 on its power play while the Whalers went 1-for-5 with a manpower advantage.

Bradley Boville had 31 saves in net for the Whalers while Garrett Golley had 22 for Wingham.

Hanover Barons lead the Pollock Division at 3-0-0-0 and are followed by the Whalers, Wingham and the Walkerton Capitals each at 2-1-0-0, Kincardine Bulldogs at 1-0-1-0, Mount Forest Patriots at 0-1-1-0 and the Mitchell Hawks and Goderich Flyers each at 0-2-0-0.

The Whalers are to host Kincardine Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.
